Software Change Management: Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration

Mik Kersten of Tasktop Technologies speaks about the Open Service for Lifecycle Collaboration initiative. The initiative provides open source and enables integration between different applications, offering tools for seamless change management.

[Mik Kersten, Tasktop Technologies]
My name is Mik Kersten; Im the CEO of Tasktop Technologies, the company behind the Eclipse Mylyn project.

Last year at the Rational Software Development Conference we learned about the Open Service for Lifecycle Collaboration initiative. And at the same time, at Tasktop we were struggling in a way to create the connector for IBM ClearQuest.

So we realized that in order to do this, we wanted to leverage open APIs and we wanted to build our commercial integrations on top of both the open source Eclipse and Mylyn APIs, but also specifications that we could count on and that could work for other kinds of ALM ALM integrations. And thats exactly what OSLC is. It enables us to do that and to both provide an open source implementation and our commercial extensions to have a seamless integration between ClearQuest and the Eclipse IDE.

So we’ve got—an interesting thing thats happening with change management in that theres been such a broad range of tools, of issue trackers, or bug trackers, of defect tracking tools and [...?...] tools. And none of these tools have had standard APIs to this point.
So what OSLC does is provides this common layer, this common rest [?] space, web service APIs, that we can all build our tools on top off, whether they’re reporting tools or planning tools, or these kinds of IDE integrations, and better clients like were building in Tasktop.

So what did is we learned about the OSLC initiative, and weve been building both the open source extensions to OSLC in Eclipse, and the commercial integration with ClearQuest, on top of the OSLC specification, this open specification that allows us to both build our commercial products and our open source frameworks on top of it. And really, its going to bring about the next level of ALM integrations with change management tools.

So there’s a big business benefit to both the producers and the consumers of the OSLC APIs. The producers get to create a standard API that a variety of tools can build on and can create high—very high quality integrations for, whether its integrations of the IDE or integrations with mobiles devices for non-programmers to access. And then you can see the benefit that results for the consumers of the APIs. They get a consistent user experience across all of their ALM technologies, and they get state of the art tool support, even for legacy systems they can’t yet migrate from.

Data Storage Solutions: achieving savings through effective storage management

Mark Samuelson of Softchoice Corporation, an IBM Premier Business Partner, talks about how customers are thinking more dynamically about the data center, and achieving savings by implementing data storage solutions that prioritize the highest-value data for backup and recovery.

IBM gives some great solutions — Tivoli Productivity Center — that helps me be able to identify what is being stored on my storage environment, on my servers. How well is it being utilized? Has the data been backed up? Those are all the components that my software can help me manage and ensure that Im able to back up and recover and be able to reproduce that data that I deem as high value. And thats something a lot of customers are achieving savings on, is — instead of storing everything for these very long amounts of time, lets store data that weve found that does have high value to the company. Low-value items can either not be backed up or just stored very transient–transient data, it can only be stored for a little while.

Customers are starting to change their thinking on the data center. Instead of just purchasing servers for an application, theyre starting to think more dynamically. With the virtualization technologies from IBM in the mid-range line, in the mainframe line, even down to the open systems line, were able to look at my computing resources as a virtual pool and be able to dynamically create new servers very quickly, very agile. And really Im buying storage and Im buying my servers when I need more processing power, not just simply for an application or a pet project.

Enterprise Asset Management: The importance of effective utilization

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/solutions/asset-management/?cm_mmc=agus_itmbipcty-20090810-usitp200-_-n-_-bv1-_-y

Bob Vavra, Editor of Plant Engineering Magazine, part of Reed Business Information, talks about how critical it is, to the success of a manufacturing plant, to employ and understand how to effectively use an enterprise asset management system.
___________________________________

I think one of the biggest issues that we have with asset management is not everybody uses it just yet. The technology is there, the ability to manage the assets on the plant floor are very, very real, but a lot of manufacturers have a very difficult time understanding why or even how to go about managing their assets. They dont know necessarily that theres going to be any return on investment for them. Theyve been running so hard for so long that there tends to be this break-fix mentality in manufacturing. And in reality, its very, very difficult today for a manufacturing plant to simply run to failure like that. Its not a good business practice, its not a very safe practice and it actually lowers your productivity.

I think one of the areas in service management that we look at is these are things that these assets, this enterprise asset management system, all these kinds of things are systems like every other system within their organization, but theyre not something that the plant manager intrinsically knows how to do, how to operate, how to manage. I think one of the effective things that we want to be able to see and our readers want to be able to see in an asset management organization, is how can you take them to understand not just what the software and hardware does, but how you use it effectively over the course of time. And thats a process of training and retraining, its a process of updating with new software releases. I think service management, as it is with any other part of a manufacturing business, is a major part of the success of whatever it is you ultimately manufacture.

One of the big challenges in that, of course, is that your plant manager may not be an IT expert, but they do need to be have access to that kind of solution very, very quickly. I think thats one of the things that weve kind of been championing is How do you get from installing a piece of asset management systems or energy management or any other kind of systems on your plant floor, and how do you make the most effective use of it? Its like anything else. If you dont take full advantage of your asset on the plant floor, youre not going to be able to reap the greatest benefit out of it. If you have an asset management system and youre underutilizing it and that may be as big a problem with asset management systems as anything else is that the solution is put there and people dont utilize it to its full advantage.
