The story is written up in full in our book, “No More Consultants. We know more than we think” (Wiley Publishing, 2009), by Geoff Parcell and Chris Collison.

Mr. Gurteen explains that the goal of a knowledge café is simple, to bring people together to have a conversation to better understand the topic, to better understand their own view on the subject, and the views of other people – the objective is not to make a decision or create an action plan. In Mr. Gurteen’s experience, once there’s no longer a need to make a decision, there’s no winning or losing in a knowledge café, people speak their minds and don’t feel the need to fight for their corner.

Chris explains that it’s very hard to isolate and measure the unique value that KM tools and techniques add to any activity because there are always other inextricably tied variables, and in many ways, the cost of trying to separate out the value may be more than the benefit. According to Chris there’s nothing more powerful than having credible business people tell stories of KM things that have worked for them. Alternatively, Chris thinks that you can look at the cost of not doing something, you can look at the cost of wheel re-invention, or you can even look at the reputational cost of not appearing to be a smart organization; however, he reiterates that at the end almost nobody can argue with a business person telling his / her KM success story.
